Michael’s mind raced as he drove home. He expected the house to be empty, but to his surprise he found Sadie in the living room curled up on the sofa. On the coffee table were a few presents; a teddy, some flowers, a little t-shirt that said "I love my mummy". He remembered it had been her last day at work, but he wasn’t sure why she was home so early.

‘How did it go?’ she asked, sitting up. ‘I felt a bit funny, so I came home after a couple of hours―’ His face stopped her in her tracks. ‘Michael, what happened with Tamsin? Are you okay?’

He sat down next to her, so angry he was shaking. When Tamsin had realised he’d seen the room, she’d done nothing except smile silently, as if it was a joke to her. When he’d asked her what it all meant, she’d said it was nothing to do with him, until eventually Sally had encouraged him to go home. ‘Does my daughter live here?’ he’d asked Sally. ‘Did Tamsin keep her?’ But Sally had said nothing.

‘Michael?’ Sadie said softly. ‘Michael, please?’

‘She lied to me about the baby!’ Michael exploded suddenly. ‘There was a child’s bedroom upstairs. With two beds in for two little girls. She lied to me. She lied to me―’

‘Slow down,’ Sadie said, ‘and calm down. Are you sure about what you saw?’

‘She’s got my daughter there,’ he muttered, ‘my daughter lives there and she’s trying to keep me away from her!’ By the end of the sentence his voice had grown loud again, and he could hear roaring in his ears.

‘So, hold on,’ Sadie said. ‘You said there were two beds. So you’re telling me that Tamsin has two daughters, well, three including Madeline?’

Michael put his head in his hands. ‘I don’t know,’ he said, ‘God, I don’t know. Maybe…’ He sat bolt upright. ‘Maybe she had twins―’

‘Michael, you’re getting way, way ahead of yourself. What did Tamsin say?’

‘Nothing. She said it was nothing to do with me.’

‘Then maybe it isn’t,’ Sadie said. ‘Perhaps the girls are Paul’s daughters.’

‘But why are they never there? She’s trying to hide them from me. She’s a bitch. A lying bitch.’

‘Michael,’ Sadie said gently, ‘don’t call her that. You’re being paranoid. There could be hundreds of reasons why you’ve never seen the girls. Perhaps they go to boarding school. Maybe they spend a lot of time at a friend’s house. For all you know they might not be there because they are ill, or even… perhaps… perhaps they died.’

Michael stared at her. All of a sudden he realised how rash he’d been. ‘Oh, God,’ he said, ‘I’ve made such a mess of this, haven’t I?’

‘Did you get angry while you were with her? Or did you manage to keep yourself together until you got back home?’

‘I…’ He thought back but it all seemed like a bit of a blur. ‘I think I might have raised my voice a bit, but I thought she had my
